FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE 2008 UK- ISRAEL STEM CELL COLLABORATION DEVELOPMENT AWARD CALL FOR PROPOSALS OVERVIEW The UK promotes the advancement of stem cell research and believes that cultivating effective collaborations between research teams in the UK and abroad will accelerate scientific progress and delivery of patient benefits. To this end, and in celebration of the 60th year of Israel's independence, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is pleased to accept applications for the 2008 UK-Israel Collaboration Development Award (CDA) programme for researchers in the field of stem cells. The CDA provides funding so that UK and Israeli stem cell researchers can travel abroad for short visits to lay the groundwork for future collaborative research efforts. This programme is sponsored by the FCO’s Global Opportunities Fund and administered through the Science & Innovation team at the British Embassy, Tel Aviv. SCOPE AND MISSION Discoveries in stem cell science portend huge advances in therapies for previously intractable diseases and the deepening of our fundamental understandings of biology. The UK-Israel Stem Cell CDA programme is intended to facilitate communication of ideas, techniques, and information between researchers via short visits between research groups. The research institutions can be involved in any aspect of basic or clinical stem cell research or therapeutics. The ultimate goal of CDA-sponsored visits is the establishment of a new formal research collaboration between the two research groups or institutions. WHAT IS AVAILABLE? Awards are to support the applicant’s travel and subsistence either to or from the UK. The value of awards funded under this call will be up to a maximum of £4000 per applicant. Expenses that are eligible for cover include economy class airfare (not premium economy), accommodation, and subsistence. No other costs will be permitted. ELIGIBILITY AND FUNDING CRITERIA CDA funding is available to UK- and Israel-based stem cell researchers who are at a group leader or PI level from academic and nonprofit research institutions. In exceptional cases, post-doctoral fellows will be considered. One of the two research groups must be based in Israel and the other must be based in the UK. Special consideration will be given to applications that demonstrate why the proposed research would benefit particularly from an international collaboration. Funding through this CDA is to support a short, 1-2 week visit between research groups, with only the applicant travelling. Longer visits of up to 3 months are possible, but will require additional justification. This program does not fund research. HOW TO APPLY Applications should be made on the following application form and submitted according to the instructions on page 9. The application should be completed by both the visiting researcher (applicant) and by the host research group. DISBURSEMENT OF CDA FUNDING CDA funds will be provided as a reimbursement for incurred expenses. Receipts, invoices, expense forms and a completed visit report must be returned according to the timetable below before payment will be issued. The short visit report (2-3 pages) should specify the actual outcomes and future actions arising from the visit. We will provide more details at the time of the award. Disbursement of funds is contingent upon return of all requested materials.
